Kaposi Sarcoma

Description

  • A malignant condition characterized by vascular tumors in the skin and organs; different forms are seen:
    • AIDS-related (epidemic) Kaposi sarcoma (KS):
      • HIV-infected patients and patients with AIDS. KS is an AIDS-defining illness.
    • Iatrogenic/Immunosuppressive KS:
      • Organ transplant–associated
    • Indolent (classic) KS:
      • Older men of Mediterranean and Jewish descent
    • African (endemic) KS:
      • Equatorial, sub-Saharan Africa
  • Systems affected: Hemolytic/Lymphatic/Immunologic; Skin/Exocrine; Gastrointestinal; Pulmonary
  • Synonym(s): Endotheliosarcoma; Multiple idiopathic hemorrhagic sarcoma; KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)
