Description
- A malignant condition characterized by vascular tumors in the skin and organs; different forms are seen:
- AIDS-related (epidemic) Kaposi sarcoma (KS):
- HIV-infected patients and patients with AIDS. KS is an AIDS-defining illness.
- Iatrogenic/Immunosuppressive KS:
- Organ transplant–associated
- Indolent (classic) KS:
- Older men of Mediterranean and Jewish descent
- African (endemic) KS:
- Equatorial, sub-Saharan Africa
- Systems affected: Hemolytic/Lymphatic/Immunologic; Skin/Exocrine; Gastrointestinal; Pulmonary
- Synonym(s): Endotheliosarcoma; Multiple idiopathic hemorrhagic sarcoma; KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)
