- Primary:
- Intrinsic gland dysfunction causing excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion
- Secondary:
- Gland hyperactivity that is a response to hypocalcemia or vitamin D deficiency
- Tertiary:
- Autonomous hyperfunction in the setting of long standing secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT)
